چکیده

1. The plasma renin activity (PRA) was measured in 76 diabetic patients who were attending an outpatients clinic. Of these patients 16 had untreated hypertension and 28 had diabetic complications, which ranged from microaneurysms to renal failure and blindness. 2. Compared with age- and sex-matched normotensive control subjects, both normotensive and hypertensive diabetic patients had significantly higher PRA (P less than 0.001). 3. Hypertensive diabetic patients also showed a higher PRA than matched hypertensive control subjects (P less than 0.005). There were no significant differences between diabetic patients with hypertension or complications compared with those without these features. 4. Although this elevation of PRA could be due to a change in another component of the renin-angiotensin system, hypersecretion of renin is the most likely explanation.

Hypertension in experimental diabetes mellitus. Renin-prostaglandin interaction.

To investigate mechanisms involved in the high incidence of hypertension in diabetes mellitus, the relationship between renin-angiotensin production and renal prostaglandin E2 synthesis was studied in rats 1 week after diabetes mellitus had been induced by streptozotocin injection. The diabetic rats became hypertensive, although plasma renin activity did not increase despite the plasma volume c...

Vascular and adrenal reninlike activity in chronically diabetic rats.

The aim of this work was to investigate, in an experimental model of diabetes mellitus, the levels of renin activity in vascular and adrenal tissues and their relationship to several circulating renin-angiotensin system components. Rats with chronic (12 weeks) streptozocin-induced diabetes showed a significant decrease in plasma renin activity (PRA), plasma renin concentration, and plasma aldos...

The effect of aspirin therapy on the plasma renin activity in myocardial infarction

In this study, the changes of renin system activity and the effects of aspirin therapy on the plasma renin activity ( PRA) in myocardial infarction were investigated. Fifty nine patients with myocardial infarction were selected. By suppressed in the former group which was statistically significant ( p<0.01).

The relationship of the renin-angiotensin system in type I diabetes to microvascular disease.

There are conflicting data on the relationship between diabetes mellitus and its complications and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Much of this relates to the patient populations studied (those with types I and II diabetes) and the definitions of diabetic complications. We studied plasma renin activity and concentration, and factors involved in their control (age, blood pressure, and ...

Pathophysiological significance of plasma total renin and prorenin in patients with diabetes mellitus.

To seek the pathophysiologic significance of measuring the concentration of total renin instead of prorenin, we determined the plasma total renin concentration by immunoradiometric assay and correlated the results with various clinical features and laboratory parameters of diabetic complication in 108 patients with diabetes mellitus. The plasma prorenin concentration was estimated as the differ...

Plasma soluble (pro)renin receptor is independent of plasma renin, prorenin, and aldosterone concentrations but is affected by ethnicity.

A soluble (pro)renin receptor (sPRR) circulates in plasma and is able to bind renin and prorenin. It is not known whether plasma sPRR concentrations vary with the activity of the renin-angiotensin system. We measured plasma sPRR, renin, prorenin, and aldosterone concentrations in 121 white and 9 black healthy subjects, 40 patients with diabetes mellitus, 41 hypertensive patients with or without...
